Straighteners for stubborn, coarse, curly hair ?

I'm an asian woman with thick coarse curly/wavey hair. I've chemically straightened it before(ionic straightening) but it always left my hair really dry and still look rough. I used to always straighten it with my own straightener and that would take me about an hour to get it nice and tame even at medium length. Does anybody have new suggestions for straightening ? What do native africans do for their hair maybe they have great tricks for straightening ?

Rule of thumb, the "stronger" straightening you want, the harsher the chemicals. The damage will make your hair thin and dry. If you want to use a weaker straightener, you'll preserve your hair more.

I recommend starting off with your shampoo/conditioner. You can't use a cheap brand. Trust me. You'll want to go with Biosilk, Paul Mitchell Smoothing (Super Skinny), etc. My clients have had lots of success with Biosilk and Paul Mitchell as shampoos and conditioners to help smooth out hair. I also recommend a leave-in conditioner such as Matrix - Biolage Smoothing Balm. This will get your hair naturally smoother without flat ironing it. Wash/condition once every 3 days. I know these products are expensive compared to the non-salon quality brands but it's worth it!

After that, use a ceramic iron. If you've been using cheap shampoos/conditioners, you'll see a huge difference once you switch!

If you make a purchase through ebay like one of the answers below, make sure the product is sealed. I have come across a few people who have purchased shampoos, conditioners, serums, etc with no seal and replaced with some cheap generic solution. Report It

Get a cermaic iron and please remember to get a small bottle of spray on "shine" spray, which is basically oil and spray on the strands before you iron, otherwise you will literally fry your hair.

I don't know if this'll work for you but there is a product called Fruictus(sp?) and you can get shine products and curl enhancers and straightening products as well as shampoo and conditioners. Check it out!

try a chi or another high end, high heat brand. Chi's have excellent reviews, though pricey - its worth it.

Maybe if you try blow drying it when its about 85% naturally dry, making sure to pop in a straightening serum then after that using a straightening iron to go over it and make is smooth and extra straight. Get a pair of GHD Straighteners, you can get them on the internet for cheaper than a shop or hairdressers and make sure you always use a heat protecting spray before you start. I always try to avoid blow drying my hair if im straightening it as it goes very frizzy.
